The school of Rehabilitation, with the history of about 48 years, was founded in 1965. At the beginning, the first group of students officially started their education at the Department of Physiotherapy in faculty of Medicine at Imam Khomeini Hospital. The Department was approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), and in 1990, the school of Rehabilitation started to function though its current name.
The first four years of academic programs of school was just limited to Physiotherapy, afterwards, teaching of other fields of Rehabilitation, such as Audiology, Occupational Therapyand Speech Therapy was added to the program.
During the Iranian 8-year imposed war (1st Persian Gulf War), there was a unique opportunity to face with various kinds of patients who needed Rehabilitation services; so, there was an emergency need for preparing the relevant therapist. From that time, the School has led the way in preparing students with the knowledge, behavior, and skills required to function within the diverse roles of the contemporary health care environment.
At present, the Rehabilitation School at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, by providing academic services in all fields of Rehabilitation, including Audiology, Physiotherapy, Optometry, Speech therapy, Orthotics/Prosthetics, Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Management is a nationally recognized leader in the education of allied health providers in Iran.
